Using Twitter - A Simple, Basic Guide

A very short time ago, Twitter was very new to us, and it didnt make any sense!

but we've discovered that its a great way to rapidly communicate with our customers, and meet new people and companies that help us serve you better.

We thought it would be helpful to make a Twitter guide available for our customers.

Twitter is one of many websites that is referred to as "social media".

In brief, it's a website where people communicate using very short sentences of a maximum 140 characters - this is tricky at first! Twitter helps you see how many characters you have left when you are typing.

You can enter your thoughts, questions, send messages direct to people, respond to messages and add links.

The messages you enter are seen by anyone who looks at your page, but also anyone who is elected to "follow you". These could be a friend, colleague, family member, business you like, or someone who has found you because you have similar interests.

Those people that are following you, can see on their home page, all of the "tweets" that the people they have elected to follow have posted.

You can elect to protect your tweets, so they will only be seen by those you accept as "followers"

How to Set Up Your Twitter Account

Go here - http://www.twitter.com and click sign up

Enter your name, this will be seen by others, you may wish to use your real name in full, an abbreviated version of your name, a nickname, whatever suits you - you can edit this

Choose your address in our case this is http://twitter/com/seventhwaveuk

You cannot change this, so choose something you will be happy with

Go to your profile page if you want to enter a line or two of information (optional), and add a picture if required

And that's it, you're off!

Some Specifics of Twitter

If you see @s in a message, this Tweet is talking to the person in question by using their username. This is seen on your wall, but not the person who is @, however, they can access all their @s from their page, and can respond if they want to.

So for example, if you inlcude the text @seventhwaveuk in your tweet, this will be on your page, not our page, but we will see it.

If you see # next to a word, these are #hashtags and mean the tweet references that word, or is particularly focused on that word and helps the Twitter community to find relevant information.
